10 Family-Friendly Travel Tips

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Traveling with the family can be a nightmare. Not only is family travel expensive if you canâ??t find affordable airline tickets, itâ??s also a huge inconvenience for you and for your fellow travelers. The key to a smooth travel experience is to plan ahead and prepare, as much as possible, for the unexpected.

1. Book non-stop flights. Although you may not be able to find non-stop flights with cheap tickets, avoiding extra time in the airport during layovers and the possibility of delays or cancellations is hugely beneficial when youâ??re traveling with family. Plus youâ??ll never have to wake a sleeping baby. It can never hurt, however, to check discount airfare sites for the most affordable non-stop airline tickets. 2. Pack your childâ??s travel carry-on with surprise. Stuff you kids backpack full of new toys, games, and activities. Or, you may even want to consider wrapping a few old items like a present. Youâ??d be surprised how exciting an old toy can become after itâ??s pulled out of new wrapping paper. 3. Schedule extra time. Whether youâ??re traveling with discount airfare or with full-priced airline tickets in hand, every traveler has to go through the same check-in and security routine. Always build in plenty of time for check in and connecting flights; everything takes twice as long and is twice as complicated when youâ??re traveling with children. Donâ??t forget to double check that TSA prohibited items list before heading to the airport for updates on carry-on or checked items to avoid delays at the security gate. 4. Reserve seats in advance. Eliminating any unpredictability when traveling with your family is a plus. When buying your airline tickets always check to see if you can secure your seat assignments in ahead of time. Consider booking your familyâ??s seats all together, splitting up the family if traveling with another adult to avoid in-flight sibling feuds, or trying to find aisle seats for easy maneuvering. Also, even if you booked advanced seating, ask at the gate if the flight is full; you may be able to request a vacant seat between you and a fellow passenger. 5. Check flight restrictions when booking. Cheap flights can sometimes come with hidden restrictions such as strict cabin baggage weight limits or fees for checking strollers. 6. Test your stamina in advance. You may be able to benefit from cheap airfare by paying for one less child if you can handle having your child sit on your lap in a chair at home for the length of your flight. 7. Schedule flights during sleep time. Use discount airfare to try to find cheap airline tickets around the time your child normally naps. Also consider booking redeye flights; not only will you find cheap airfare, you may be able to benefit from having you child sleep through a nighttime flight. 8. Board first or last. You receive the same boarding privileges with cheap airline tickets as you do with regular-priced tickets: when traveling with children youâ??ll have the option of boarding first. Early boarding can be convenient because it allows you extra time to get situated; however, boarding last will cut down on the time your kids have to wait on the plane. 9. Beware of bulkhead seats. What you gain in legroom with bulkhead seats youâ??ll lack in under-the-seat storage, which is even more valuable when traveling with children. Also these seats often lack armrests, preventing your child from comfortably cuddling with you. 10. Check your luggage. You already have plenty to keep track of when youâ??re traveling with family – multiple little ones, tickets, IDs, bags â?? but you can eliminate unnecessary hassle when you check your bags. Think of it this way: what you save on discount airfare you can put toward the extra fees airlines may charge you for checking bags.

Florida is one of the top tourist destinations not just in the US but throughout the world as well. This is because it is home to some of the best-known landmarks, including Walt Disney World Resort, SeaWorld, Gatorland and Universal Studios, which is why many travel companies are offering various Disney World vacation packages that include side trips to any combination of your choice. In addition, such packages also allow any family to choose the type of accommodation they prefer such as a Disney World hotel, condo, or villa. With this article, we present a few simple tips on how to have a family-friendly vacation in Florida.Tip #1 Consult your family and plan an itinerary ahead of scheduleVacations are fun as long as there are activities to do that are appropriate to each type of family member. You may need to consult each member of the family so that you will have an idea what activities should be included in the trip. For instance, if you have small kids in the family, then a trip to Walt Disney world will surely bring in lots of great experiences for them. If this is the case, consider booking from any choice Disney World vacation packages being offered by a trusted travel company—this package will take you to Walt Disney Resort with little effort. On the other hand, teenagers will probably enjoy a visit to Universal Studios for a taste of that Hollywood magic. Fortunately, Disney World vacation packages also offer combination trips to Disney World and Universal Studios.Tip #2 Look for a family-friendly hotelEspecially if you are travelling with kids, it is very important that you stay in a family- or kid-friendly hotel that has kids in mind and not just their adult visitors. Fortunately, a stay in a Disney World hotel will ensure that you and your family—young children included—will be given first-class accommodations and will not be burdened with the inconvenience of making sure the kids will not cause so much trouble. In addition, apart from the kid-friendly décor, kid-friendly hotels also have fun and free activities for young children, such as pool parties, art classes, and so on. Tip #3 Before going out, ensure that everyone is comfortableAs any parent knows, kids who are uncomfortable tend to get cranky for no apparent reason. If you plan on doing a lot of sight-seeing and touring throughout the major tourist attractions in Orlando, make sure that everyone is comfortably dressed and have had enough to eat before any major visit to any of your chosen landmarks. One key in keeping a vacation family-friendly is if everyone gets along well; so as to avoid conflicts, make sure that everyone feels comfortable enough to go out with the rest of the family.Tip #4 Set a budget and stay within that budgetFinally, overspending and/or running out of cash before the vacation is over is one sure way of ruining a great vacation. This is why parents must set a budget and plan activities that will allow the rest of the family to stay within that budget. Of this is your first time to go out with the family, do check some online resources or forums to get an idea of how much you will spend for the number of days you plan to go on a vacation.
